One Coin, One Day

The first officially minted coins in Japan – in copper and silver – were believed to have been modeled after the Tang Dynasty's coins. The Imperial Court introduced the coins in an attempt to promote currency-based transactions to replace those based on trading in kind, such as rice and cloth. However, the coins did not circulate well among the general public. When introduced, one coin was equivalent to one day's wages for a laborer.
