The Rolls-Royce of Ancient Japan

Haniwa are terracotta clay figures that were created during Japan's Kofun period. During this period, the spread of horseback riding customs introduced from the continent led to an increase in the production of horse-shaped Haniwa. Detailed depictions of riding equipment such as saddles, stirrups, bits, reins, and decorative elements provide clues to the types of horse gear often buried as grave goods in burial mounds.
