Born to a farmer in a western region of modern-day Tokyo, young and talented Isami was adopted by the Kondo family of the Tennen Rishin-ryū school of swordsmanship. He succeeded the school and joined a patrol unit in Kyoto to protect the shōgun, the unit later became the Shinsengumi. He eventually became a high-ranking “Hatamoto” samurai but was killed in the Boshin War while serving as the captain of the Kōyō Pacification Corps.
