The Missionary in Samurai Disguise

In 1708, during Japan’s ban on Christianity, Italian missionary Giovanni Battista Sidotti brought an oil painting on a copper plate. The figure, cloaked in a blue mantle with downcast eyes, tear-streaked cheeks, and a thumb peeking from the sleeve, leaves a lasting impression. Disguised as a samurai, Sidotti landed alone on Yakushima Island but was soon captured and died in an underground prison in Edo.
