A Japanese Monkey in China?

The depiction of fur, using both ink and gold pigment, is natural and meticulously detailed, and has been praised as an expression that goes beyond realism. The work was once donated by Takeda Shingen to Kakujo, the head of Manshuin Temple of the Tendai sect. It has also been noted that the model is a Japanese macaque, not a monkey native to China.
