The Demon-Slaying Deity
This artwork shows Shōki, who exterminates evil spirits that cause harm and illness. According to legend, he appeared in a dream of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, destroyed a plague demon, and cured the emperor’s illness. In Japan, Shōki became a popular figure on Boys’ Day banners and samurai dolls. In this scene, he is shown pinning down a plague demon with his left hand and pulling out its eye with his right.
