This illustrated handscroll is believed to have been created in the late Heian to early Kamakura period. It depicts "Shamon Jigoku," a realm of hell reserved for monks who indulged in eating meat and drinking alcohol. This scene portrays "Fusshi Jigoku," where the damned are thrown into a river of boiling excrement and urine, and their tears turn into flames. The coldly objective composition only heightens the sense of horror.
