The Iwakura Mission visited 12 countries in the U.S. and Europe with Iwakura Tomomi as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary. The purpose of the mission was to promote friendship and goodwill with each country, to modernize Japan by inspecting and surveying advanced countries, and to revise unequal treaties. It was a major project with a total of 107 members and the participation of the government leaders of the time.
