The Painting Demon, Indeed

This gorgeous and beautiful work by Kawanabe Kyōsai depicts hawks and pheasants against a background of colorful flowers. However, a snake coiled around the pheasant on the ground, locking eyes with the hawks in the tree, gives an eerie impression. It reflects not only beauty, but also the complex and unconventional allure of Kyōsai's art.

Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889)

A 19th-century ukiyo-e and Japanese-style painter. He called himself a "painting demon" and was also known for his eerie motifs, including demons, specters, and ghosts.
