A Mouse Drawn in Tears
A masterpiece by Sesshū, a grand master of Japanese ink painting. The composition leads the viewer’s eye from the foreground to the background, highlighting the richness and contrast of ink tones as well as the boldness of his brushstrokes. Sesshū is also known for a famous legend in which he drew a mouse with his tears.

A Zen monk-painter of the Muromachi period. He established a distinctive style that had a significant influence on later Japanese painting.
