A Dark Chapter of Faith
This is one of the "fumi-e" created in the 17th century to identify hidden Christians following Japan’s ban on Christianity. "Fumi-e" were religious images that people were forced to step on as a means of revealing believers who refused or showed hesitation. Originally, painted images were used, but as these wore out quickly, durable versions like this one were produced in brass.
