The War God

Tamonten, originally a deity from ancient India, later became one of the guardian deities of Buddhism. In Japan, he is known as one of the Four Heavenly Kings and is also venerated as a god of war under the name "Bishamonten." This statue presents a dynamic figure dressed in armor reminiscent of Tang Dynasty generals, holding a pagoda in his right hand and a staff to subdue evil in his left, while trampling a demon underfoot.
