The Man Who Chose Peace

A Tokugawa retainer and statesman active from the late Edo to Meiji period, Katsu Kaishū is regarded as the "Father of the Navy" for laying its foundations. During the Boshin War, he served as the last Army Commissioner and negotiated the bloodless surrender of Edo. After the Meiji Restoration, he became the first Minister of the Navy. Although a master of Jikishinkage-ryū swordsmanship, he bound his sword and faced assassins unarmed.
