Japanese-Christian Fusion Art

This 16th-century lacquerware piece, made for church rituals, belongs to the genre known as "Namban lacquerware," produced in Japan for export to Europe. Designed as a slender shrine, it uniquely blends Western aesthetics with traditional Japanese techniques, such as "maki-e" and mother-of-pearl inlay. At its center is a copperplate oil painting imported from Europe, depicting Mary, Christ, Joseph, and John.
